Most Common Complication Seen During Anesthesia

Khursheed Mama, DVM, DACVAA, professor of veterinary anesthesiology at Colorado State University, says this complication is common even in healthy patients.

Low blood pressure is the most common complication we see during anesthesia, Khursheed Mama, DVM, DACVAA, professor of veterinary anesthesiology at Colorado State University, says—even in healthy patients.

The simplest way to manage this complication is to turn the gas anesthesia down if possible and give intravenous fluids, Dr. Mama continues. Those 2 things should get the patient to a normal range. She says surgical stimulation can also help by getting the sympathetic nervous system activated. And when those methods don't work, Dr. Mama says she usually uses vasoactive drugs, such as dopamine or dobutamine.
