Additional Pet Foods Recalled for Excess Vitamin D Risk

Article

The FDA announced today that pet food manufacturer ANF is voluntarily recalling bags of its Lamb and Rice Dry Dog Food due to potentially elevated vitamin D levels.

Pet food manufacturer ANF Inc is voluntarily recalling bags of its ANF Lamb and Rice Dry Dog Food due to potentially elevated vitamin D levels. Notice of the action follows the recall announcement earlier this week of Sunshine Mills dry food products for the same reason.

Announced by the FDA, the ANF recall affects 3- and 7.5-kg bags of the pet food. The 3-kg Lamb and Rice Dry Dog Food is labeled with a Best By date of November 23, 2019 and a UPC of 9097231622. The 7.5-kg bag is labeled with a Best By date of November 20, 2019 and a UPC of 9097203300.

These recalled products were distributed in retail stores in Puerto Rico. No other ANF products are affected by the recall.

According to the FDA, dogs ingesting excessive vitamin D may exhibit such signs as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss. Renal dysfunction may occur.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled products should stop feeding them to their pets. The products may be disposed of or returned to the retailer for a full refund. In addition, consumers whose dogs have consumed either of the recalled products and are exhibiting any signs of illness should contact their veterinarian.

The ANF action announced this week is the latest of multiple recalls conducted in cooperation with the FDA this month for dry pet foods due to risk of elevated vitamin D levels, including for the brands Natural Life, Nutrisca, and Orlando, as well as Sunshine Mills' Evolve, Sportsman’s Pride, and Triumph.
