Overuse of Antibiotics in Veterinary Dentistry

Video

There's almost no indication for antibiotics in dentistry anymore.

In general, antibiotics are being way over used in veterinary dentistry, explains Brook A. Niemiec, DVM, DAVDC, DEVDC, FAVD, chief of staff at Southern California Veterinary Dental Specialties & Oral Surgery in San Diego.

He says as much bacteria is being spread the day before the dentistry procedure when the patient is eating dinner than during the actual procedure. If you didn't pre-treat the patient's dinner with antibiotics, Dr. Niemiec says you don't need to pre-treat the dentistry. There's almost no indication for antibiotics in dentistry anymore, especially for routine prophylactics and healthy pets.
