Prevalence of Emergency Exotics Cases

The prevalence of emergency cases involving exotics, says Don Harris, DVM, medical director at the Avian & Exotic Animal Medical Center in Miami, Florida, depends on your reference point.

"In terms of the number of exotics cases that are emergencies, probably one-third of all sick exotics come in as emergencies. If the question is how frequently would an emergency clinic see exotics emergencies, it really depends on the case load of the clinic. But I would venture to say the emergency clinic next door to me that handles after hours emergencies, they probably see 20 or 30 small animal cases a night, and they pretty much see 2 or 3 exotics emergencies. I guess you could extrapolate and say 10% of presentations in an emergency clinic could be exotics."
