How Do Pet Behavioral Medications Work?

Lisa Radosta, DVM, DACVB, owner of Florida Veterinary Behavior Service, explains that it’s nearly impossible to simplify how behavioral medications work in pets. It’s like asking why the world is round, she says. 

Dr. Radosta says there are many medications available for veterinarians to prescribe and they all work differently. In general, these medications alter the neurochemistry of the animal. She encourages pet owners to view behavioral medications like pain relievers—the effect will be suppressed, but the cause of the pain may always be present.
