CBD Health Co., a company that markets and sells hemp-based cannabidiol (CBD) health products, has announced that it will soon be offering a line of hemp-based products specifically for pets.

“We are excited to launch our premier CBD product line for pets,” Jo De Leon, CBD Health’s president, said. “These new products have been in the works for some time as we realize the growth of the pet market and its importance to the domestic and international markets.” In 2017, American pet owners spent $69.51 billion on their pets, with money spent on supplied and over-the-counter medications surpassing $15 billion.

CBD Health—which was acquired by EnviroTech in January—currently offers products marketed to humans, including hemp protein, gummy bears, and energy shots. The new animal line will include tinctures, balms, treats, and food supplies. “The line creates great synergy for both our company and the consumer, as both can enjoy the benefits from hemp-based products,” De Leon said.

According to a company press release, the line of pet products was created in response to the emerging trend of pet owners dosing their pets with CBD as a means to manage symptoms associated with arthritis, nausea, seizures, anxiety, and cancer.

“We intend to work closely with veterinarian doctors attending trade shows, and launching national campaigns to penetrate the market,” the company said. “Along the way, we will educate the public on safe and natural ways to treat their pets.”

CBD Health joins a growing list of company launches and acquirements focused on CBD products for pets, including Phyto Animal Health—owned by Medical Marijuana Inc.—and Diamond CBD.

Lawmakers around the country have also been pushing for legislation that would allow veterinarians to discuss the use of CBD products with clients as part of a pet’s treatment plan. On March 15, legislation was introduced into the New York State Assembly that would authorize licensed veterinarians to prescribe medical marijuana to their patients for the treatment of medical conditions. In California, a bill is being considered that would require the California Veterinary Medical Board to establish guidelines for licensed veterinarians to discuss with clients the use of cannabis in their patients—and to protect veterinarians from disciplinary action for doing so.
