RECALL: TruPet Issues Second Raw Food Recall This Year

Article

One lot of this raw dog food topper meal enhancer has been recalled due to potential Salmonella contamination.

According to a company email announcement, TruPet, of Milford, Ohio, has voluntarily recalled 667 cases of its TruDog Boost Me Mighty Meaty Beef Topper Meal Enhancer due to potential Salmonella contamination. This is the company’ second recall this year—1 lot of its dog treats was recalled in February for the same reason.

The affected raw dog food enhancer has the following attributes:

  • Lot Number: #20190531 13815
  • Distributed throughout the United States via online retailers Chewy.com and TruDog.com

Pet owners who have handled the affected product are considered to be at risk for Salmonella infection and should seek medical help if they develop symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, watery or bloody diarrhea, fever, or headache. Similarly, veterinary care should be sought for pets that show any of these signs. All contaminated materials should be washed thoroughly.

No illnesses have been reported to date due to the recalled product.

In an email sent out to its customers, TruPet states: “As you know, our boosters are made from real muscle meat, blood, bones, and vital organ mix. We apply no heat to the product as it is flash frozen. And while that retains all the natural nutrients of the meat, with raw meat there is always a risk for meat to be contaminated with Salmonella, even with human meat—it’s part of the process.”

Consumers who have purchased the affected raw dog food enhancer should return it to the place of purchase for a refund. For further questions, consumers can call TruPet at 800-476-8808.

“Handling meat is one of the most daunting tasks out there,” the company email noted, “and we are committed to continuing to be the best in the market.”
